Class 6 Science Chapter 12 Notes

Chapter Name: - Electricity And Circuits

Class 6 Science Chapter 12 Notes

Section - A (Keywords with Meaning)

Class 6 science chapter 12 Keywords

An electrical device that has a transparent glass-cover and a filament. It emits light on electric supply.

A thin metallic wire that glows on supplying electric current.

The materials that allow electricity and heat to pass through them.

Examples: –

Metals like iron, silver, copper, aluminium

The materials that do not allow electricity and heat to pass through them.

Examples: –
Plastic, wood, paper, fibre

An electrical device that has a positive and a negative terminal and supplies electric energy on connecting to a circuit.

An electrical device used to make and break an electric circuit.

Switches are made of conductor materials and generally covered with insulators to avoid electric shock.

A combination of electric cells, conducting wire, switch and electric appliance.

An electric circuit consists of: –
Power supply – Electric cell
Electric current-carrying wires – copper or aluminium wires
Switch – conductor material to make or break a circuit
Electric appliance – bulb, electric bell, tv, refrigerator

Terminal is the ends of a battery.

An electric cell has two ends, so it has two terminals. The end with a metal cap is called a positive terminal while another with a metal disc is called a negative terminal.

Section - B (Question - Answer)

Question 1

Fill in the blanks :

(a) A device that is used to break an electric circuit is called switch.

(b) An electric cell has two terminals.

Question 3

Explain why the bulb would not glow in the arrangement shown in Fig. 12.13.

Explain why the bulb would not glow in the arrangement shown in Fig 12 13

The handle of the screwdriver is made of insulators, and an insulator does not allow the electric current to pass through it. The circuit is not complete in this arrangement hence the bulb will not glow.

Question 4

Complete the drawing shown in Fig 12.14 to indicate where the free ends of the two wires should be joined to make the bulb glow.

Complete the drawing shown in Fig 12 14 to indicate where the free ends of the two wires should

To make the bulb glow we need to complete the circuit. So, we will join one of the ends to the positive terminal of the bulb and another to the positive terminal of the electric cell as shown in the figure below.

Solution - Complete the drawing shown in Fig 12 14 to indicate where the free ends of the two wires should

Question 5

The purpose of using a switch is to make and break an electric circuit. Switches are made of conductor materials and covered with insulators to avoid electric shock.

Some electrical gadgets with switches are refrigerator, TV, torch, AC, table fan

Question 6

An eraser is an insulator. Therefore, the bulb will not glow even after completing the circuit if instead of a safety pin we use an eraser.

Question 7

Would the bulb glow in the circuit shown in Fig. 12.15?

Would the bulb glow in the circuit shown in Fig. 12 15

In the fig 12.15, the circuit is not complete as both the wires are connected to the same terminal of the electric bulb.

But, if we connect the positive terminal to the tip of the electric bulb then the circuit will complete and the bulb will glow, as shown in the figure below.

Solution - Would the bulb glow in the circuit shown in Fig. 12 15

Question 8

The bulb begins to glow is an indication that the object helped the circuit to complete. It means the object was a conductor as only a conductor can help a circuit to complete.

Question 9

Rubber is an insulator and an insulator does not allow electricity to pass through it. While working on the electric circuit, the rubber gloves help an electrician to protect him against any electric shock.

Question 10

The metallic tools like screwdrivers or pliers are the conductor of electricity. these tools will allow the electricity to pass through them while working on an electrical circuit. To avoid any shock to the electricians, the handles of such tools are made of insulators like rubber and plastic.
